Part Three: Spiritual Addiction - In and Out of Balance

Just because someone may consider you to be spiritually addicted does not necessarily mean that is a negative. We each have our own path and we decide what we need to learn in our lives. We wouldn't be living in this world if that wasn't the case.

I personally don't think it is a negative to be living a life in spirituality whether it be through a religious practice or through your own personal beliefs. There are many people living in this world who lead a fulfilling life by being very spiritual. They are connected to what they believe is source. Many of these people dedicate their lives to these spiritual pursuits. Often times they give up worldly possessions and cares and spend their entire lives dedicated to their practice. The ego is transformed. The self is still an object of desire, but instead of pursuing earthly pleasures, the goal is enlightenment. There is nothing wrong or negative with this lifestyle. I will even go so far to say that this is not even spiritual addiction. This is a conscious decision someone makes about their path in life and they have no judgements of others.

In contrast, the person who is spiritually addicted have ego. The ego is very strong and prevalent in their lives. The path they choose is a belief that they are extremely in tune to source. They may even believe that they are the spiritual masters sent to Earth to teach others and in many respects that may be true. However, the way in which they dedicate their lives to spiritualism is different than the person mentioned above. When they teach others how to live they often say "This is the way. There is no other way." It is a command. The true spiritual master will not command you, but rather guide you. Wisdom is given, but it is up to you to decide what to do with it.

The ego of the spiritually addicted person will often get in the way. This is the belief that they are better than you because they are more spiritual - in their eyes at least. When this belief is present, the ego has not yet been transformed. This is still the lower form of the ego. The ego is still in pursuit of earthly desires. This ego still has judgements, still has worldly desires, and still judges the self and others for seen flaws.

In conclusion, the main difference between someone who is in balance with their spiritualism and someone who is out of balance is the ego. When the ego gets in the way, labels are put on others and judgements are formed about the self and others.

The question then becomes - how does one lead to being in balance with their spirituality? This will be discussed in part four of this series.
